ABSTRACT
A survey has been made of the durability of mirror coatings of aluminum and chromium- alurninum used by astronomical observatories in the United States and Canada.
Some general remarks are given concerning the deterioration of the coatings and their care and expected life.
It is concluded that the most probable useful life of a coating of either of the films is from two and one- half to upward of five years, depending upon the excellence of the coating, its care, and the degree to which it is subjected to condensed moisture and dirt particles.
