Something to keep in mind also is the age and condition of the lenses.
Depending how old they are and how much the coatings have degraded from atmospheric contaminants and frequent cleaning (something I would
expect in damp Japan), the knife edge images will look more mottled
than a newer lens that has not been subjected to this treatment. I have seen plenty of old lenses that have lost a lot of their smoothness because of age and conditions that they operated in. The largest number of lenses that we have had to recondition have come from Japan and Germany (which is also a damp place). If you want, I can post some before and after pictures.
